Every September we publish a gothic issue and it's my favourite one of the whole year to put together. There really is nothing quite like a gothic wedding - the fashion, the venues, the flowers, the details, the atmosphere – I love it all. And the whole idea of promising yourself to someone until death? That's incredibly dramatic. If you ask me, lifelong commitment has always been a little bit goth.

The first thing we always do is the cover shoot, as it sets the tone for the entire magazine. This time we were lucky enough to be invited to photograph the brand-new Atelier Heritage collection from WONÁ Concept. Even better, we got to do it at Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol. And yes, before you ask, you really can get married there! Imagine exchanging your vows inside their Victorian chapel, then wandering through centuries of history for your portraits. We take a look at some of history's original alternative brides and the women who challenged expectations long before it was fashionable to do so. We share gothic wedding ideas that don't rely on pumpkins, fake cobwebs or October clichés, and ask whether alternative weddings are in danger of becoming another product to be packaged and sold. After all, capitalism has never met a counterculture it couldn't commercialise.
